Vivo Xplay5 release date: Flaghip with 'borderless' display to release March 1

Vivo's teaser for Xplay5 Weibo/Vivo

Vivo is starting the month of March right with a big smartphone launch. On March 1, the China-based tech firm will unveil the long-rumored Vivo Xplay5, whose existence was confirmed by the company itself a couple of days back.

The tech firm made the announcement via Weibo, where it teased the handset as "borderless," which hinted that the device will boast a dual-curved display. This means that Vivo is looking to make this new device catch the eye and turn the heads of users.

The appearance of the Vivo Xplay5 hints that Vivo wants to give Samsung a run for its money. Exactly a week prior to the Xplay5's release, Samsung will unveil its flagship, the Galaxy S7, which is believed to come with an Edge version with a curved display.

Clearly, dual-curved display has been Samsung's territory for quite a while but Vivo's bold new take on its flagship will attempt that the category does not belong to the South Korea-based tech giant alone.

Vivo Xplay5 is the follow-up to the Xplay3S, which was released three years ago. It is only this year that Vivo had the chance to refresh the line and the device's suggested sleek design hints that Vivo wants to go all-out for this new outing.

The handset is rumored to sport a 5.5-inch Quad HD display. Humming under its hood is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, which will work perfectly with 4GB RAM. Some reports say it might even boast a whopping 6GB RAM.

On the imaging side, users are looking at a 16MP rear-facing shooter and 8MP front-facing snapper on the Vivo Xplay5. It is also bound to break new ground by offering solar charging as a way to juice up the battery.

The rest of what the Vivo Xplay5 will be revealed in Beijing Water Cube on March 1.
