The second installment of "True Detective" may have failed to reach expectations, but actor Matthew McConaughey continues to have high hopes for the series.

In an interview with DirecTV's "The Rich Eisen Show," the actor said that he is willing to reprise his award-winning role in the HBO Original crime anthology drama.

"I miss Rust Cohle, man," the actor said in the interview. "I miss watching him on Sunday nights."

The actor also said that he was really pleased with how his character developed in the first season of the series.

"I was a happy man when I made that for six months, because I was on my own island. Luckily my wife put up with me," he said.

McConaughey starred with Woody Harrelson, Michelle Monaghan, Tory Kittles, and Michael Potts during the first season. The cast and story received several nominations from different award-giving bodies, including the Outstanding Drama Series and the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for McConaughey and Harrelson in the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards. While the actors did not win, the series won the Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series.

The fate of the series dimmed after the fans' lukewarm reception to "True Detective" season 2, which featured another star-studded cast including Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Vince Vaughn and Taylor Kitsch.

HBO president Michael Lombardo blamed himself for the mediocre performance of the second season, saying that he pressured Pizzolatto to come up with the material for the follow-up season as soon as possible.

While the cable network has yet to announce if there is still a chance to see another installment of "True Detective," McConaughey revealed that he and Pizzolatto are already talking about plans on how his disturbed character could return to the show.

"It would have to be the right context, the right way," the actor said in the interview. "That thing — when I read it, I knew in 20 minutes if I can play this guy, Rustin Cohle, I'm in."

HBO has yet to comment if a third season of "True Detective" will take place.
