'True Detective' season 3 air date, cast: is the original cast coming back to the show?

Matthew McConaughey as Rustin Cohle in "True Detective" season 1 HBO

Fans are still hoping that "True Detective" season 5 will still be made official someday. The hope for this ever happening was refuelled with Matthew McConaughey interested to return on the show.

The actor, who played the role of Rustin Cohle in "True Detective" season 1, spoke about the character in an interview with "The Rich Eisen Show," via Time.

"I miss Rust Cohle, man. I miss watching him on Sunday nights," McConaughey admitted to host Rich Eisen. He then recalled how it felt filming "True Detective."

"I was a happy man while we made that for six months, because I was on my own island," the actor went on to say about his "True Detective" stint, which was acclaimed by critics and fans alike.

While there's no mention of "True Detective" season 3, some fans now hope that it might be time for Cohle and Martin Hart (Woody Harrelson) to be back in action.

However, a new season for the series hasn't been made official yet even though it's been almost a year since "True Detective" season 2, starring Rachel McAdams, Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn and Taylor Kitsch, aired.

While the series actually follows an anthology format, where a brand-new story and set of characters are featured every season, "True Detective" season 3 might need a massive overhaul.

Following the poor reception of the second season, "True Detective" is expected to come back strong in the small screen. Unfortunately, no concrete plans about it have been made by HBO.

Nic Pizzolatto, the show's creator, is still in contract with HBO up to 2018. Rumor has it that he will make "True Detective" season 3.

However, there are also reports that he might end up making a new one seeing that the new HBO programming president Casey Bloys reportedly wants the writer to come up with a whole new show instead.
