The anticipation for a "True Detective" season 3 recently reignited after series director Nic Pizzolatto signed an exclusive deal with HBO that will last until 2018. While there are no specific projects lined up for the acclaimed director at the moment, some speculations claim that it could possibly include another installment of the neo-noir crime-drama anthology.

"I am thrilled to continue our relationship with Nic, as he is one of the most exceptionally talented writers and producers working today," HBO Programming Pesident Michael Lombardo shared in a recent statement. "I look forward to seeing where his unique creative vision will take us next,"

While there is no assurance that a third season of "True Detective" will be produced, Pizzolatto's deal with HBO might make it possible. However, several sources told Variety that HBO wants to have a major revamp on the show because of the poor response to its second season. The cable network even reportedly presented Pizzolatto with several options, including the hiring of a set of writing staff or another series showrunner while he works as the show's executive producer.

"True Detective" earned rave reviews during its first season, where Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson portrayed the roles of two homicide investigators named Rust Cohle and Marty Hart respectively. The series instantly became a cult favorite, and even earned several award nods, including Emmy nominations for both actors as well as an outstanding drama series nomination for the show.

Unfortunately, the show failed to keep up with the expectations during its second season, where Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Taylor Kitsch, and Rachel McAdams starred. Both the story and the portrayal of the characters were slammed by critics during its run.
