'Thor 4' plot rumors: Could a fourth movie happen? Chris Hemsworth, Taika Waititi already have some ideas

Marvel is expected to retire most of the old Avengers to make room for new ones after the untitled "Avengers 4." While the studio has yet to reveal the fate of each character, "Thor: Ragnarok" director Taika Waititi and Chris Hemsworth are mulling the God of Thunder's future beyond the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) phase three.

In an interview with USA Today for his new film "12 Strong," Hemsworth said he and Waititi voiced interest in working together again for a potential "Thor 4" and were actually "throwing ideas" about it on New Year's Eve.

"We gave cheers to Thor 3," the actor said. "But it also was like what could we do with four? We could do this and this. We were throwing ideas around. But also, just to work together again. That was one of the most enjoyable creative partnerships I've ever had."

After two underwhelming films, Waititi has successfully reinvigorated interest in Thor's standalone franchise and revolutionized the character with "Thor: Ragnarok." Hemsworth is apparently interested to see where his character would go next, so does the franchise director.

Back in November, Waititi told Cinema Blend that he is keen on working with Marvel again as he and Hemsworth finally got a real grasp on the character and a good understanding on  "We understand where we want to... not where we'd want to go story-wise, but how we would approach the character, and how much fun we could have with it."

The big roadblock, though, is that it is not known whether Marvel is even planning for another "Thor" installment. Hemsworth said it is contingent on Thor's fate in "Avengers: Infinity War" and "Avengers 4."

Then again, the studio has repeatedly said it is viewing those films as capstone projects for everything fans have seen in the MCU in the last decade. Marvel has been tight-lipped about its phase four slate, saying it is not going to deliver concrete answers until after "Avengers 4" is out. So right now, Hemsworth, like fans, will just have to wait and see.

"Avengers 4" is due in theaters on May 3, 2019.
