'The Grudge' reboot plot, cast rumors: Sony eyeing Andrea Riseborough for lead role

Andrea Riseborough in "Black Mirror." Netflix

The American adaptation of the Japanese horror flick "The Grudge" is getting a reboot from Sony soon and it may have just found its lead in Andrea Riseborough.

Deadline broke the news this past weekend that the "Black Mirror" actress is in talks to star in the new version of the film. Not much is known about the plot of the reboot yet but should she board the project, Riseborough would portray a different role than Michelle Gellar, who starred in the 2004 American remake.

As recalled, Gellar's Karen Davis is a social worker living in Tokyo with her boyfriend. This time, "The Grudge" will reportedly have a detective and single mother for the lead.

Beyond Riseborough's potential casting, no details were revealed including whether the reboot would still feature the characters of Kayako and Toshio –the mother and son who were murdered by their husband/father and carriers of the curse.

"The Grudge" reboot would be the 13th film in the Japanese franchise, which also has a video game and several graphic novels. It started back in 1988 with the TV movies "Katsumi" and "4444444444" which, according to Screen Rant, served as the foundations for the rest of the installments. The sequel "Juon: The Curse" was its first full-length film and "The Ring" crossover "Sadako vs Kayako" was the most recent one.

Sony's reboot has no release date at the moment, but it does already have Nicolas Pesce on board as its director. This would be Riseborough's first ever role in a horror film.

Hopefully, the new take on Takashi Shimazu's cult Japanese thriller would be as successful, if not more, as its American predecessor. The latter notably brought in a staggering $187 million worldwide on a budget of just $10 million and spawned two sequels.

Apart from "The Grudge" reboot, Riseborough is also said to be circling "Amazon-Sky miniseries Zero, Zero, Zero."
