Lisbeth Salander's adventures continue on the big screen, but with a different actress for the third time.
The Hollywood Reporter exclusively revealed that Sony Pictures is planning to bring back the fictional superhacker from Stieg Larsson's "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" novel in a new film, but actress Rooney Mara will no longer portray the iconic role.
According to the report, the film production outfit is planning to skip the story from the second installment of Larsson's "Millenium" series titled "The Girl Who Played with Fire" and go straight to newly released fourth installment called "The Girl in the Spider's Web" written by David Lagercrantz after Larsson's death in 2004.
Sony wants to use the plot of the new book to reboot the "The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo" franchise with new actors since Mara and Daniel Craig will no longer reprise their roles as Salander and her lover-turned-friend Mikael Blomkvist, respectively.
The report said that Craig was initially offered to work on the next two sequels of the film, but he reportedly demanded a pay raise. Since the studio wants to cut down on the production cost for "The Girl in the Spider's Web" film adaptation, it means that Craig's request will not be granted.
This will be the third time that Salander will be given life in the big screen. The first one was portrayed in 2009 by Swedish actress Noomi Rapace, who won several Best Actress awards for the role. Then Mara took over after Sony earned the rights to produce the film in the U.S. back in 2011. Mara also earned praises and accolades from the critics at that time, including an Oscar Best Actress nomination.
But despite the plans to proceed with "The Girl in the Spider's Web" film, the report said that Sony is not completely scrapping "The Girl Who Played with Fire" project since the studio already paid multi-million dollars for its script.
At the moment, Sony is looking for the next actress who will take over the role of one of the most remarkable contemporary literary characters to date.
