'Super Mario Odyssey' DLC news: Luigi is back, new online modes

"Super Mario Odyssey," being an "Odyssey," is obviously about the character that many have grown up with, Mario. While his brother, Luigi, as many would argue, deserves his own game, he will at least appear in "Super Mario Odyssey" in the game's first ever downloadable content (DLC).

To set things straight, unfortunately, Luigi will still not be playable in the game. Nevertheless, his appearance in the game is a big thing for a game with only Mario. A big part of the DLC will be a new event called "Luigi's Balloon World" and who better to become host than Luigi himself. There will be two modes, Hide It and Find It.

In the Hide It mode, players will have to go anywhere around the world to hide a balloon in their best hiding place within 30 seconds. On the other hand, Find It mode is quite straightforwardly the opposite. Players will find a balloon that other players have hidden also within 30 seconds.

The more the balloons, the better the score the player gets. For that reason, it is not surprising for the DLC to also add online high scores. "The key to setting high scores is knowing every nook and cranny of a kingdom's terrain," said Nintendo, per Polygon. "It's like a new form of objective-based speedrunning!"

The update will also add three new Mario costumes: Sunshine Shades, Musician Hat, Knight Helmet, and of course, their whole outfits. Note also, however, that the DLC will only take effect, or rather, Luigi's Balloon World will only appear when the player finishes the whole game.

"Super Mario Odyssey" was first released back on Oct. 27, 2017. It was well-received by fans and became one of the big reasons for the Nintendo Switch success.
