'Suicide Squad 2' news: Margot Robbie teases Harley Quinn will be back on screen soon

Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn in "Suicide Squad" Warner Bros.

Fans will not have to wait long to see Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn back on the big screen. The actress recently revealed she will suit up as the pigtail-rocking, bubblegum-chewing Maid of Mischief sooner than everyone is expecting.

Speaking to Collider, Robbie expressed her excitement on jumping back to the role. When asked when that could happen, she said: "I think we're very close, actually. Everyone has been working really hard, myself included, to get Harley back on screen. I think it will be quite soon. There's so much more to explore with her. I can't wait!"

Should there be no roadblocks ahead, the actress hopes her return would come around next year. However, Robbie did not specify in which film she is appearing next.

Currently, she is linked to the "Suicide Squad" sequel, the spin-off "Gotham City Sirens," and another untitled spinoff focused on Harley and the Joker. According to Comic Book, "Suicide Squad 2" is the only project with a director at the moment: Gavin O'Connor ("The Accountant"). However, Robbie said she has not sat down with O'Connor yet to talk about the details.

Not much is known about Harley's upcoming projects at this point. Even "Suicide Squad 2" has had little to no progress, beyond the director. The project may likely be stagnant for a while especially since Warner Bros. and DC are in a transitional phase following the underwhelming box office and critical performance of "Justice League" last month.

Additionally, not all of the cast members are eager to reprise their roles. Jared Leto, for one, is non-committal to the idea of portraying the Joker again following the polarizing reception of his "Suicide Squad" performance. As previously noted, he was underused in the actual film as well when he was being sold hard in Warner Bros' ad campaigns.

As usual, fans can only keep their fingers crossed that the film will happen. For now, they can catch Robbie as the disgraced former figure skater Tonya Harding in "I, Tonya" which is currently in theaters. Leto, on the other hand, will appear as an American soldier in Netflix's "The Outsider" set for release sometime next year.
