'Streets of Red' gameplay news: Players only have one life

How true games are to reality will depend on the kind of game. While usually games would have health bars or multiple lives giving players more chances, that would not be the case for indie brawler game "Streets of Red." Gamers will definitely be raging more than they did with the "Dark Souls" series.

People who play "Streets of Red" only have one life throughout the entire game. If they die, then that is it; they will have to restart the whole game. While there may be other games that incorporate the same "permadeath" idea, developers Secret Base highlights the "Streets of Red" gameplay around it.

"True permadeath like this might sound a little daunting at first, but the game is really designed around it," says Tobe, one of the developers from Secret Base, as per Polygon. "Unlike many modern beat-'em-ups that rely on grinding and leveling up ... we wanted to create something more skill-based, which allows players to improve as they learn to understand the mechanics."

If players have played some NES brawler games such as "River City" or "Double Dragon," this game may seem quite similar as they were the inspirations for the game. However, unlike these role-playing games in which players earn experience points to get upgrades, players of "Red" will get cash.

Cash will then be exchanged for upgrades and other items such as "soul token" which simply allows players to revive. That said, it may contradict the whole "permadeath" idea but the problem here is that players will have to balance between buying soul tokens and getting upgrades.

Players will definitely need to spend wisely and allocate their very limited resources properly. "Streets of Red" will be coming out on the PlayStation 4 and the Nintendo Switch later this month.
