Fans of the zombie-survival game "State of Decay 2" should be feeling all the excitement right about now as Microsoft has officially confirmed the release date of the upcoming sequel, which lands on the Xbox One and PC platform in May.

According to the announcement, "State of Decay 2" will be released on the Xbox One and on Windows 10 PC exclusively as an Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Game Pass title. Players will be able to get a hold of the game on May 22.

The new game in the "State of Decay" franchise will be available in two editions -- a Standard Edition, which is valued at $30, and an Ultimate Edition, which has a price tag of $50.

In terms of content, the Ultimate Edition will include two add-ons -- the Independence Pack and the Daybreak Pack, which will be dropped to those who purchase the Standard Edition on a later date. Also, fans who avail of the ultimate version of "State of Decay 2" will be able to gain access to the game four days earlier than those who paid for the Standard version.

Aaron Greenberg, general manager of Games Marketing at Microsoft, told fans that they hope to foster a stronger and more long-term relationship with the community of "State of Decay." He says that this sequel will not only accomplish that goal but also give many more players the chance to experience "State of Decay 2."

"Our goal is to build a long-term relationship with the State of Decay community and to foster deeper experiences with the franchise. We believe State of Decay 2 accomplishes this goal by immersing fans in the ultimate zombie survival fantasy, and we want to give more players the opportunity to join in and experience this unique game," Greenberg said in an official announcement.

"State of Decay 2," just like its predecessor, will take players inside a post-apocalyptic world where zombies run rampant. However, this time, in order to survive, players will be left to decide on the fate of their brethren in a new and more daring premise of "kill or be killed."

In addition to this, the new zombie title will come integrated with cross-platform game play, a feature that fans have been clamoring for since the first installment. Here, three players can actively play together in-game.

Pre-ordering can now be done through the Microsoft store.
