Days after Mark Hamill insisted that his character, Luke Skywalker, is not going to turn to the dark side of the Force, a new hint that he actually will has just surfaced. The latest clue comes from the new "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" collectible pint glasses sold from Alamo Drafthouse theatre chain.
There are three versions of the merchandise; one features the characters from the Light Side, another shows those from the Dark side, and one focuses on Porgs. However, it is the first one that is causing a stir among "Star Wars" fans.
As seen from the photo below, the Dark Side version features the Jedi master along with villains Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie), Snoke (Andy Serkis), and a few other characters.
It is important to note that Luke is also depicted on the Light Side, so this could be just like the other "Star Wars" marketing material that has surfaced so far which shows both facets of the character. Still, the cups hint that there may really be some darkness in him, although it does not exactly confirm the switch.
Speculations of an evil Luke stemmed from the first teaser of the movie which was released in April. As previously reported, he claimed in the video that the Jedi must end. Considering it is unknown what happened to him during his voluntary isolation on Ach-To, some predicted he may have ventured down a darker path.
Apart from the trailer, there are other clues of his treacherous turn in the posters as well.
An international poster advertising the IMAX version of the movie which separated the characters from different sides in opposite panels also featured Luke in both, calling to question where his allegiances lie. Then, on the official poster, he is positioned behind all the characters, looming large in the typical villain spot.
Despite these clues, Hamill insists that his character is still loyal to the Light. He is just discouraged by the bad choices he made from the past that led to some catastrophic consequences and that eventually stripped him of his confidence.
One way or another, fans can only confirm Luke's fate when the "Star Wars" saga continues this Christmas season. Directed by Rian Johnson, "The Last Jedi" opens in cinemas on Dec. 15.
