"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" director JJ Abrams clarifies his statement regarding Rey's lineage during the Tribeca Film Festival, where he told host Chris Rock that "Rey's parents are not in Episode 7."
He offered no further information or clue, but assured that the dilemma is something that has had the Force-sensitive hero lose her sleep as well.
"So I can't possibly say in this moment who they are. But I will say it is something that Rey thinks about, too," Abrams elaborates.
Abrams's remark practically debunked the well-known theory that Luke Skywalker might be the "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" protagonist's father. This also put paid to the possibility that Han Solo and General Leia Organa (therefore Kylo Ren) are related to Rey as well.
After a hurricane of theories made by "Star Wars" fans surrounding the director's statement, Abrams makes his previous statement clear to Entertainment Weekly after the event.
"What I meant was that she doesn't discover them in Episode 7. Not that they may not already be in her world," Abrams explains. This once again opens up a lot of possibilities with regards to the direction of Rey's story in "Star Wars: Episode 8."
Rumor has it that Jyn Erso, the protagonist in "Star Wars: Rogue One," could be Rey's mother primarily for their resemblance and, presumably, for what they can do. In an interview with MTV, however, Rey's essayer Daisy Ridley shot down the theory.
"I'm not being funny you guys, but just because she's white and got brown hair... it doesn't mean she's my mom," the actress said, adding that it's "funny" how her character's parentage receives so much attention than it should be given.
Fans will know more about this mystery in "Star Wars: Episode VIII" on Dec. 15, 2017. "Star Wars: Rogue One," which hits the big screen on Dec. 16 this year, may also offer some insight.
