'Spider-Man: Homecoming' cast news: Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man joining Tom Holland

Robert Downey Jr. will officially be in "Spider-Man: Homecoming." Marvel

"Spider-Man: Homecoming" has added a major character in its ensemble in the person of Robert Downey Jr. The actor will reprise his role as Iron Man in the solo Spidey film.

The news is hardly a surprise to fans of the characters. "Captain America: Civil War" will establish the two's connection. After all, it was Tony Stark who recruited Spider-Man to join his team in the upcoming film.

In the comics, it is Iron Man who builds Peter Parker a suit, believing it will make him a better asset for his team. This relationship is expected to grow in "Spider-Man: Homecoming."

Not much is known about what Iron Man will specifically be up to in the highly-anticipated Spider-Man reboot. Fans and media outlets, however, believe that his addition make the film a bigger moneymaker than it already is.

Prior to the inclusion of Downey in the film, cast news about "Spider-Man: Homecoming" has been trickling in the web in the past weeks. Just days back, it was reported that Tony Revolori from "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and Laura Harrier from "One Life to Live" joined the cast.

According to reports, the latter will play a "significant" role in the film while the former will play either Peter's high school friend Manuel or his enemy inside the campus.

Zendaya has also been cast to play an unidentified role while Michael Keaton, who played "Batman" in the big screen in an eponymous movie back in 1989, will play the villain.

Fans would like to see the former Caped Crusader play the role of Vulture, one of Spider-Man's iconic villains. Whether or not he will in "Spider-Man: Homecoming" remains a mystery for now.

Marisa Tomei will play the role of Aunt May with young actor Tom Holland taking on the role of the web-slinging superhero.

"Spider-Man: Homecoming" will be released on July 7, 2017.
