Is Sony Mobile following the footsteps of its leading competitors by releasing a bigger smartphone?

Rumors are beginning to spread that Sony's mobile phone manufacturing arm is working on a larger flagship phone, and it will be called the Sony Xperia Z5 Plus.

The unofficial blog site called Xperia Blog first discovered the leaked information, with a picture of the rumored device making the rounds in the Chinese social media site Weibo early this month and picked up by Android Community on Twitter.

Based on the picture, the Sony Xperia Z5 Plus will come in three colors: black, gold, and silver. It also allegedly has a side panel fingerprint scanner technology which is said to come with the new Xperia Z5 smartphone line.

The device, which is considered as the phablet version of Sony's flagship smartphone, is reportedly known in the company as the Sony E68XX (E6833, E6853, E6883). Rumor has it that it will have a 5.5-inch display size or larger, and it could be the first smartphone that will be released with 4K Ultra HD display. It will also be equipped with a Snapdragon 810 (MSM8944) chipset, which is also rumored to be coming to the Xperia Z5 and Z5 Compact.

Aside from the Xperia Z5 Plus, Sony is also expected to release the Xperia Z5 and Z5 Compact, which are rumored to come with a lot of upgraded features such as a full 4 GB of RAM, a 20.7-megapixel camera with the Sony Exmor RS IMX230 CMOS sensor that can handle 4K video recording and HDR capabilities, and a 4500 mAh battery capacity. It will also come with an 8-megapixel front camera. While both devices are reportedly coming out with almost the same specs, the Z5 Compact will only have a smaller dimension.

Sony Mobile is expected to release the Sony Xperia Z5 and Sony Xperia Z5 Compact during the company's IFA press conference on Sept. 2, which could also be where the alleged Sony Xperia Z5 Plus will be revealed.

However, the company has yet to confirm if the rumors are true.
