Project Morpheus has been renamed the PlayStation VR, Sony Computer Entertainment announced during the gaming firm's press conference at the recently concluded 2015 Tokyo Game Show. And now, more details about the upcoming virtual reality headset are starting to surface online.

Bloomberg recently reported that Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House revealed that the upcoming device will be marketed as a new gaming platform to strengthen their lead in the video game industry.

"VR rewrites the rule book on how you can create games," House told Bloomberg. "You're seeing a large amount of interest and work happening among smaller teams, because it's possible to create something in VR that is very simple but still very magical."

According to PlayStation Lifestyle, Sony recently sent out a press release regarding the prototype specs of the upcoming PlayStation VR console, saying that it will be composed of a VR headset and a processor unit upon release.

The console will also come with a 5.7-inch OLED display with 1920×RGB×1080 panel resolution (960×RGB×1080 per eye), a refresh rate of 120 Hz and 90 Hz, as much as 100-degrees field of view, HDMI and USB connection interface, as well as social screen and 3D audio functions.

Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida also added other new information about the upcoming PlayStation VR, saying that there are a lot of games that are compatible with the new console which are still unrevealed.

"We are developing a variety of titles. Many, we have not disclosed as yet. In showing games from different studios, there are games for core gamers for VR. We could show more from first party, but luckily, third party is very active now, and I'm very happy to see that almost all Japanese publishers are working on VR versions of their IPs like 'Final Fantasy XIV' and 'Danganronpa and Hatsune Miku.'"

At the moment, Sony features several PlayStation exclusive games, including "Among The Sleep" from Krillbite Studio, "The Assembly" from nDreams, "Futuridium VR" from Mixed Bags game, "Harmonix Music VR" from Harmonix Music Systems, "Trackmania Turbo" from Ubisoft Nadeo and "World War Toons" from Reload Studio.

PlayStation VR is expected to be released during the first quarter of 2016.
