'Sherlock Holmes 3' cast, release date: Production gets rolling later this year

Robert Downey Jr. will be back for "Sherlock Holmes 3," bulking up his already-hectic schedule. Warner Bros. Pictures

Half a decade after "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" hit the big screen, the long-awaited trilogy-capper "Sherlock Holmes 3," is confirmed to be in the pipeline.

Robert Downey Jr. himself, who plays the iconic titular character, made the surprising "Sherlock Holmes 3" announcement during an interview with Shortlist. There, he revealed that the production will likely begin later this year.

"We're talking about it right now. We can do some preliminary stuff," the "Captain America: Civil War" actor said. He added, "We'll attempt to make one this year. It really is a big deal to go and do those movies."

Downey also said that he is "excited" to reprise his role as the beloved detective and expressed his enthusiasm about working with Jude Law, who played John Watson in the franchise, and Guy Ritchie, who directed the first "Sherlock Holmes" films.

Downey will be a very busy man in the years to come but hasn't shown signs of slowing down. Apart from "Sherlock Holmes 3," which is expected to arrive next year at the earliest, he is also open to making "Iron Man 4."

Although there's no confirmation about the said Marvel movie, his superhero character will still very much be a huge part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe moving forward.

In an interview with GQ, he did spill the beans on the number of projects on the cards for him prior to his potential retirement. He revealed this when he was asked about what the right age will be to leave Hollywood, to which he answered 65.

"Look, I just need a 14-year plan. That's all. I got seven projects left before tee time," Downey said, and "Sherlock Holmes 3" could be very well be one of those.

Despite his hectic schedule (he is not called the highest paid actor for nothing), Downey also finds time to attend therapy sessions with his wife Susan.

"It's like housekeeping. You know what I mean? And it's so much better to have housekeeping come in, just changing the sheets a couple times a week. Not when Ron Wood has just trashed it," the actor said.
