'Reign' season 3 spoilers: What's next for Mary and the French court after Francis's death in episode 6?

 The CW

After the inevitable death of Francis (Toby Regbo) happened in the previous episode of "Reign" season 3, his wife Mary (Adelaide Kane) must face a new task in the next episode of the series.

Before Francis took his last breath, the King of France asked Mary to remain in France until his mother Catherine (Megan Follows) becomes the country's regent. Even though Mary had a hard time dealing with Catherine for the longest time, he still gave in to her dying husband's final wishes and agreed not to leave France until Catherine gets the position and secure the future of the next king.

In the next episode of "Reign" season 3 titled "Fight or Flight," Mary will fulfill her promise and help Catherine secure the regency in the French court. The ladies in Francis's short life will bond in spite of their grief. Mary will do this even if it will have a negative effect on her alliance with Scotland.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, series showrunner Laurie McCarthy revealed the fate of Mary and the rest of the members of the French royal family after Francis's death. She said that while Catherine will become the regent of France, she will have to face a lot of challenges along the way.

"[His death] shifts the power dynamic at court between Narcisse (Craig Parker) and Catherine. There's going to be a huge battle for the regency coming up and a blossoming relationship between she and Narcisse because his ambition is going to be awakened again," McCarthy shared.

The series showrunner also revealed that the mounting battle between Mary and Elizabeth (Rachel Skarsten) will escalate because the queen of England will suddenly have to compete with the widowed queen of Scots to find the most ideal man to enter a political marriage with.

This season will also show the significant changes in the dynamics inside the French court, especially since Francis's replacement Charles (Spencer MacPherson) will be a very young king.

"Reign" season 3 episode 6 airs on Friday, Nov. 20, on The CW.
