'Ray Donovan' season 4 release date, spoilers: Emotional transition to greet Ray next season

Katie Holmes and Liev Schreiber in "Ray Donovan" season 3 Showtime

Sorry Katie Holmes fans, the actress may not be seen in "Ray Donovan" season 4.

Holmes portrays one of the recurring characters Paige Finney in the third season of Showtime's crime drama series. According to the series showrunner David Hollander, the intimate relationship between Paige and Ray (Liev Schreiber) is not one of the show's finest moments.

In a previous interview with TV Line, Hollander said that he was not happy with the fact that the viewers were confused because Paige and Ray's personal relationship was not developed from the start of the season.

"We knew in the design of the character that that was supposed to happen. I don't think it was our best move," the series showrunner said. "I think we were in kind of a dynamic place where it needed to happen to trip up other wires. And by the time it happened we began to downplay it, to the point where it was a blip."

But in case Holmes's character will not appear in season 4, Hollander revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that Ray might still find something to look forward to when he moves to Los Angeles next season.

"Season four is going to look closely at Ray's option or desire to go further with facing his own past, but that desire is going to lead him into a new form of relationship, a relationship that is going to open up his life personally and professionally in yet another large city," Hollander revealed.

This means that a different dynamic will be seen between Ray and his family, including his crooked father Mickey (Jon Voight).

The series showrunner also revealed that fans should also look forward to an emotional but fun plot when "Ray Donovan" returns on Showtime in 2016.
