"Person of Interest" season 5 may be the end of the sci-fi crime drama after all. Executive producer J.J. Abrams revealed during the Television Critics Association Press Tour that the show could be nearing its end, a thought that saddens the "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" director.
"My guess is it is the final season," Abrams said, as quoted by TV Line. "The only heartbreak there is how much good story there was to come if it were to have continued," he went on to say, adding that the upcoming season has already been designed to serve as the series finale.
But should "Person of Interest" season 5 somehow pull off a "miraculous" resurgence in the ratings department, "things can be adjusted." But for now, season 5 is considered as the final season of the series.
The EP could not be happier knowing that the show went on as many years as it had but he reiterates that he "would've loved to see that continue." Finding the show a new home has been broached, although this isn't what they are doing at the moment.
Abrams did not forget to praise the "amazing" work of showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Greg Plageman on the CBS procedural. Right now, CBS does not have "Person of Interest" season 5 on its midseason premiere lineup though.
"We don't yet have a schedule, but I know they will see the light of day," Abrams promised. "People will get to see these episodes," he assured. When that will happen is the question he and team are still unable to give answer to at the moment.
"Person of Interest" season 5 only has 13 episodes, noticeably fewer than what the previous seasons had. The decrease in the number of episodes started the speculation that the series will be getting the axe.
New seasons of the series usually premiere during the month of September. It is unclear if this will still be the case for "Person of Interest" season 5.
