OnePlus 6 release date, specs rumors 2018: To feature all-screen display with notch

After several weeks of speculation about OnePlus' next flagship smartphone, the company itself has shared firsthand information on the OnePlus 6. Just like the earlier reports, it was revealed that the OnePlus 6 will go with the trend started by the iPhone X by sporting a notch display. For some people, having an iPhone X-like notch in the OnePlus 6 is not necessarily a good news, but the company's CEO has some explanation to it.

The first official look of the OnePlus 6 was given exclusively to The Verge, which confirms that the 2-18 flagship handset will have a notch display. It looks like OnePlus is aware of the backlash received by many tech manufacturers that unveiled their latest devices at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018 last February. Most of the newly-unveiled Android phones this year have the notch, a feature that many people has already attributed to the iPhone X. With this, all those tech firms that will launch a new device with a notch in the near future are likely to be called copycats.

OnePlus CEO Carl Pei stated that the notch in the OnePlus 6 will be different than all others presented in the public. For the company, adding the notch display does not mean that its upcoming device will closely follow the iPhone X, or other Android phones that adapted to this trend. The notch in the OnePlus 6 can be seen as a way to maximize the screen area, particularly on the portion that contains the notification contents.

"What you are essentially doing is moving the entire notification bar up, giving users more content on their screen," Pei revealed. Furthemore, the OnePlus 6's notch was described as having a bigger size than that of the Essential Phone with 19.616mm x 7.687mm dimension. Although, this notch is still smaller than the iPhone X's original feature.

In terms of the aspect ratio, Pei said that the OnePlus 6 will have a bigger screen area compared to the previous ones, although the actual body size is pretty much the same as the OnePlus 5T, retaining a 90 percent screen-to-body ratio.

Another thing worth noting is that the OnePlus 6 will keep the 3.5mm headphone jack, which is good news for users who do not wish to plug in their audio accessories to a USB-C port.
