Robert Zemeckis' "Back to the Future" movie shown in 1985 made several predictions about the future. For instance, it proposed that there would be a time when video messaging and hands-free video game consoles will be possible, and TVs will have the ability to show more than one channel at once. Those predictions have already come to pass, but some of its biggest predictions are still missing in this day and age. There are no flying cars or hoverboards roaming around the cities.
But on the film's 30th anniversary this year, a sports and shoe apparel brand will fulfill one of the given forecasts in the movie – Marty McFly's shoes with self-tying laces. Shoe designer Tinker Hatfield stated that he and his team at Nike are planning to update the design of the shoes worn by actor Michael J. Fox's character in the movie. During the Agenda Emerge conference in Long Beach, California on Monday, Hatfield said that they are hoping to come up with the Nike MAG with Power Laces as seen in the film. The so-called Air Mag has an electroluminescent out-sole, space age materials, and as well as a rechargeable internal battery that can allegedly last for 3,000 hours.
The popular brand managed to release an earlier version of the shoe back in 2011, and simply called it the Nike MAG. This, however, has no Power Laces, and only 1,500 pairs were auctioned online. The proceeds of the sales were donated to the Michael J. Fox Foundation that aims to raise money for further research on Parkinson's Disease, the disease of which the highly-acclaimed actor has been diagnosed. The highest price bid for a pair reached $37,500, and it was sold to British rapper Tinie Tempah.
Although there is no exact date for the release of the futuristic pair of shoes, Hatfield said that they still have "11 and two-thirds months left in 2015" to finish the project.
"Back to the Future" will be celebrating its 30th anniversary this year with several planned tributes for the show.
