'Mr. Robot' season 3 news: USA Network confirms show's season 3

Mr. Robot USA Network

USA Network announced the renewal of "Mr. Robot" for its third season that will air sometime in 2017.

Despite the consistent ratings decline since the second season premiered in July, USA Network claimed that the psycho thriller brings a younger set of audience to the network.

"We couldn't be more proud of Mr. Robot, a series that has pushed boundaries, captured the cultural zeitgeist, and been honored as one of the best dramas on television," said NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment President Chris McCumber said in a statement, as reported by Deadline. "Midway through its second season, Mr. Robot continues to break new ground and open up new opportunities for the network."

The first season showed how lead character Elliot Alderson (Rami Malek) worked with the hacker organization called fsociety to take down the multi-national company called the Evil Corp. In the second season, Elliot and the other members of fsociety deal with the repercussions of their attack.

The show earned multiple recognition from various award giving bodies, such as a Peabody Award as well as two Golden Globe trophies. It is also nominated in six Primetime Emmy Awards categories, including Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor for Malek, Outstanding Writing for series creator Sam Esmail and Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series, among others.

Aside from Malek, the series also stars Christian Slater as the titular character Mr. Robot, Portia Doubleday as Elliot's childhood friend Angela Moss, Carly Chaikin as Elliot's sister Darlene, Grace Gummer as FBI field agent Dom DiPierro, Michael Cristofer as Evil Corp CEO Phillip Price, Martin Wallstrom as Evil Corp's ruthless senior vice president, and Stephanie Corneliussen as Tyrell's wife Joanna Wellick.

Meanwhile, the synopsis for the sixth episode of "Mr. Robot" season 2 has been released. It reads: "A video is released by fsociety; Darlene decides to act on an old desire."

The episode is slated to air on Wednesday, Aug. 24.
