'Mary Poppins Returns' release date, plot news: Disney drops delightful first trailer during Oscars 2018

Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins in "Mary Poppins Returns." Disney

Disney's most iconic nanny is back. During Sunday night's 2018 Oscars, the studio dropped the first trailer for "Mary Poppins Returns," a sequel to the 1964 film with Emily Blunt in the lead role.

Set on a windy afternoon in London, the first-look clip sees Lin-Manuel Miranda's Jack and Joel Dawson's young Georgie Banks chase a kite whipped away by the strong winds. The pair reels it back in as it sails back to the sky, only to pull Mary Poppins down with the kite. Once back on solid ground, Blunt's character visits her old friends Jane and Michael Banks who are now all-grown up and played by Emily Mortimer and Ben Whishaw, respectively.

"Mary Poppins! It is wonderful to see you," a bearded Michael says, to which the sassy nanny replies: "Yes, it is. Isn't it?"

Check out the clip below:

"Mary Poppins Returns" is set 25 years in the future from the original. It introduces new faces, including Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh and newcomer Joel Dawson who will all portray Michael's children. The sequel also stars Meryl Streep as Mary's eccentric cousin, Topsy; Angela Lansbury as the Balloon Lady; Julie Walters as the Banks' housekeeper Ellen; Colin Firth as William Weatherall Wilkins; and "Mary Poppins" alum Dick Van Dyke as a retired banker.

Many have called for Julie Andrews, the original Mary Poppins who earned an Oscar for the role, to make a cameo, although she is currently not billed. Despite this, the actress has already given the sequel and her successor her approval and confidence.

Last year, she shared that she is a "huge fan" of Blunt, saying "I have met her and I love her; she's real and fun and very talented."

For Blunt's part, she acknowledges the high bar set by Andrews but admits that no one is ever going to outdo her predecessor. As she described Andrews, "She's just unbelievable. There will never be anyone else like her."

"Mary Poppins Returns" opens in theaters everywhere on Dec. 25, 2018.
