MacBook Air 2018 release date, specs news: Apple to revive its thinnest Mac lineup at June's WWDC

The public has not heard any updates from Apple regarding the MacBook Air lineup in a long time, but it appears that the company is planning to revive the Air series this year. According to the latest rumors, the Cupertino-based tech giant will announce the all-new Mac Air at the Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) this June. The laptop is believed to boast a number of much-need hardware upgrades, including a special display feature similar to that of the current MacBook Pro model.

The previous WWDC events showcased the recent MacBook and MacBook Pro updates. Per the latest reports, it is possible that this year's WWDC will focus on the MacBook Air. The Air lineup has not received a major hardware update since 2013, except for a few occasions that Apple hinged the RAM and built-in storage capacity a bit higher. Still, it is evident that the MacBook Air would need an overhaul soon, starting with the processor that is already outdated.

It was previously suspected that Apple would announce, or at least mention about the impending MacBook Air 2018 release at the company's recent hardware event. The education-focused event in March, however, gave the stage to the new 9.7-inch iPad model.

Nevertheless, the new Mac Air is expected to arrive sometime this year, in spite of the earlier rumors that Apple would officially kill the Air lineup. To note, the MacBook Air was presented as Apple's thinnest Mac laptop, but its existence was questioned as the company launched a much thinner 12-inch standard MacBook model.

One of the possible highlights of the MacBook Air 2018 is the 13.3-inch amorphous silicon (a-Si) panel, powered by LG Display. This a-Si display technology is the same used by the current MacBook Pro model. It was suggested that LG Display will begin delivering the a-Si screen panels to factories by April, while the mass production will start sometime in May or early June. Assuming that there will be no manufacturing issues, the MacBook Air 2018 will be ready just in time for a WWDC appearance.
