MacBook Air 2016 and Surface Book specs comparison: How do devices differ?

The dawn of a new laptop war is coming with the nearing arrival of new-generation laptops from Microsoft and Apple Inc.

On Oct. 6, Microsoft made an unexpected move when it released its first ever actual laptop product dubbed as Surface Book.

The surprise unveiling of Microsoft's "ultimate laptop" will purportedly hurt the upcoming laptop releases from the Cupertino tech firm because of its reported faster performance than that of MacBook Air, as well as its functional design using the "dynamic fulcrum hinge" that can turn it into a tablet in an instant.

But can the Surface Book topple the next-generation MacBook Air 2016 based on its overall specs?

Here is a comparison between the two ultra-thin laptop devices:

The new Microsoft laptop will feature a 13.5-inch PixelSense display with a resolution of 3000 x 2000 (267 PPI) and aspect ratio of 3:2.

Under the hood, the Microsoft Surface Book will be equipped with two different variants of Intel Skylake dual-core processors that consumers can choose from depending on their needs. One of them has an Intel Skylake i5-6300U processor with 2.4 up to 3.0GHz while the other one comes with the Intel Skylake i7-6600U with 2.6 up to 3.4GHz. Both are equipped with an Intel HD Graphics 520 and can support either 8 GB or 16 GB LPDDR3 RAM.

Consumers can also choose among the 128 GB, 256 GB, 51 2GB and 1 TB internal storage, depending on where they intend to use it.

Apple's next MacBook Air offering will be 4.86 mm thin, and will feature a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels for the 11-inch model as well as 1440 x 90 pixels for the 13-inch variants. Both models will feature LED-backlit displays for better colors.

The upcoming MacBook Air laptop will be equipped with Intel Core i5 and i7 chipset as well as Intel HD Graphics 6000 processor. It will also come with flash storage of up to 512 GB, believed to be 17 times faster than the average hard drive that only has 5400 rpm.

Depending on the user's needs, either the Microsoft Surface Book or the MacBook Air 2016 from Apple Inc. will surely give them a good performance.
