iPhone 2018 release date, specs rumors: Apple to release super-sized iPhone bigger than Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus

Rumors are mounting that Apple will release a trio of new iPhones later this year, including a Plus-sized iPhone X successor that may have a larger display than the recently revealed, 6.2-inched Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus.

The latest one comes from Bloomberg which reported it will sport an OLED screen that measures "close to 6.5 inches" with a resolution of 1,242 by 2,688 pixels. It is also expected to feature the Face ID scanner and an A12 processor. The big phone would join two other models – a standard-sized iPhone X upgrade and a low-cost, LCD iPhone.

Apple's new lineup is said to be a part of the company's larger plan to lure not just consumers who are into so-called phablets, but also those who are looking for a less expensive version of their products.

Citing "people familiar with the products" who spoke anonymously, the publication claimed Apple is already running production tests with suppliers involving all three new iPhones. They are expected to be announced this fall, although sources said these plans could still change.

If accurate, though, the OLED models may ship with a gold color option this time. Apple apparently planned to release a gold iPhone X last year but canceled it due to production issues. This resulted in two color options only: the silver or space gray. With the addition of an appealing color, the tech giant is hopeful of getting a boost in sales, especially in Asia.

It is considering releasing a dual-SIM variant as well. Then again, nothing has been set in stone yet. There is a chance Apple may hold out this feature and wait for the E-SIM instead. The technology allows a phone to connect to multiple networks without the need for a removable chip.

Other possible features for the 2018 iPhones include the iOS 12, upgraded augmented reality capabilities, deeper Siri integration, and Animojis in Facetime.
