The hardware changes in Apple's upcoming iPhone 2018 models are still up in the air, but according to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, one of the differences will be on the modems inside the handsets. The next set of iPhone devices, including the possible iPhone XI, iPhone 9 and iPhone SE 2, is expected to rely solely on Intel modems and ditch the ones made by Qualcomm.

Usually, Apple uses a combination of Qualcomm and Intel modems, like in their current lineup of iPhone models. As reported by MacRumors, Kuo predicts that the Cupertino-based tech firm will shake things up for Qualcomm as it will exclusively use Intel modems from now on.

It is believed that the switch to Intel modems will make the internet data speeds consistent for each iPhone device. According to Tech Radar, those iPhone X units that are using Qualcomm modems reportedly boast faster and more stable internet connection compared with those that have the Intel modems. Apple is said to be more reliant on Qualcomm modems because of their performance, although the company might have found more confidence in Intel modems this time around.

It is possible that Apple will no longer be dependent on Qualcomm as Intel modems are now capable of supporting both GSM and CDMA radio systems. An example of this modem, the latest Intel XMM 7560, is said to have faster connectivity in all regions and networks within the United States.

With the older Intel modems having no CDMA support, Apple has no choice but to use Qualcomm modems for some of its hardware in spite of the ongoing dispute between the two companies. To recall, Qualcomm has filed a lawsuit against Apple for an improper sharing of proprietary code with Intel without its knowledge.

Regardless of what modems will be used for the iPhone 2018 models, the expectation will always be toward the better. It is expected that the upcoming iPhone devices will have faster LTE speeds as Apple will need to step up its game against its rivals, most especially Samsung that is known for its latest Exynos 9 processor that offers significant boost in cellular connectivity.
