Huawei Matebook X Pro review: Laptop corrects predecessor's most disliked feature, but camera still placed awkwardly

Attendees of the 2018 Mobile World Congress (MWC 2018) expect the launch of new flagship phones in an exhibition, but Huawei is bringing something more. The China-based electronics company revealed the Matebook X Pro, a new laptop that is the successor to its Matebook X.

The Matebook X is known for its thin bezels, and this Pro version is no different. If anything, the Matebook X Pro actually boasts even thinner bezels than its predecessor. Huawei claims that this beautiful design has a 91 percent screen to body ratio.

As for the display itself, it measures 13.9 inches on the diagonal and has a 1.5:1 aspect ratio measuring 3,000 by 2,000 pixels.

Huawei has decided to put the webcam on the keyboard portion of the laptop because the bezels were made thinner. This is not a new design choice, as the new Dell XPS 13 has a similar arrangement. However, finding this design choice on the Matebook X Pro means that it might also carry the awkward problems the XPS 13 had. For instance, with the camera placed too low, people who participate in video calls might broadcast the bottom part or the lower half of their face.

In any case, the Matebook X Pro is a capable machine. It will be powered by an eighth generation Intel i5 or i7 processor. It also has a discrete graphics processing unit (GPU), courtesy of Nvidia's GeForce MX150. It has one USB-A slots and two USB-C slots. The power button doubles as a fingerprint scanner, for added security.

The Matebook X was a good laptop, but one of the most common complaints about it is its very short battery life. Huawei has decided to remedy this with the Pro version, saying that the battery life on this latest model is improved by 15 percent and can last up to 14 hours.

The Huawei Matebook X Pro comes in two colors; space grey and mystic silver. It will be available in spring, and will cost around $1,842.
