'How to Get Away with Murder' season 4 spoilers: EP on the aftermath of the baby twist and Laurel and Frank's future

The midseason finale of "How to Get Away with Murder" season 4 finally answered one of its biggest questions: What happened on the night of the time jump scene?

To recall, the Keating Four's plot to implicate Simon Drake (Behzad Dabu) did not go as planned. He walked on the kids and overheard them discussing it during the party at Caplan & Gold, and after snatching Laurel's (Karla Souza) gun, he accidentally shot himself in the head.

While Laurel fled to Annalise's (Viola Davis) hotel, she got stuck in the elevator and delivered her baby two months early, no thanks to Frank (Charlie Weber) who accidentally elbowed her while attacking Connor (Jack Falahee) early in the episode. Thankfully, Annalise heard Laurel's call for help and tried saving the dying infant whose first cries rang out as the episode concluded.

While that ties a loose end or two, there are still numerous questions left in the air. To tease viewers, showrunner Pete Nowalk shared some scoop on what will happen next, especially to Frank, Laurel, and her baby.

Picking up right where the show left off, Nowalk tells TV Guide that Laurel and Frank will not be in a good place following the pregnancy complications brought about by the latter's accidental shove; and that is just the start. There are reportedly more things on the horizon that could make things worse.

"There's even going to be new stuff for them to deal with that might keep complicating their relationship," he teased. This could have something to do with the fact that Dominic (Nicholas Gonzalez), the hitman working for Laurel's father, overheard Connor's call about Souza's character.

It is unclear if Jorge (Jose Zuniga) already knows what is going on, but once he does, Nowalk says he would not take it well. According to him, the powerful man might take a "very surprising action" on the next episode.

As for the baby's whereabouts, Nowalk said assuming it is in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit would be "a little too optimistic." He did not give any hints on the infant's location, but the producer promised the answer will be revealed when the show returns. That goes to the identity of the baby's father, too.

"Stranger things have happened on this [show], we might surprise you with a good news option," he said.

"How to Get Away with Murder" returns on Thursday, Jan. 18, at 10 p.m. EST on ABC.
