'House of Cards' season 4 release date: Netflix orders new season for 2016 premiere

House of Cards Season 4 announcement Twitter

Netflix finally confirmed the return of its notable political drama "House of Cards" for its fourth season.

The streaming network announced the return of the show via its official Twitter account Thursday, showing an image that says "Season 4 Coming 2016," with the caption "I will leave a legacy. #Underwood2016."

The renewal news did not come as a surprise, since fans had been waiting for it for months. Series showrunner Beau Willimon also confessed on his Twitter account that he has been secretly coming up with the script for the show's fourth season with the writing team for months.

The critically acclaimed series stars A-list actors Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright, who portrays the role of US President Frank Underwood and his wife Claire respectively. Season three ended with a very tension-filled confrontation between the most powerful couple in the US, and Claire threatens Frank that she will leave him.

But based on the spoilers for the coming season, Frank is planning to run for re-election in the US presidency. Will he manage to persuade his First Lady to stay with him until the elections?

"House of Cards" made a lot of first time records since it was released February 1, 2013.

The political drama series earned nine Primetime Emmy Award nominations during its first season, which makes it the very first original web-based television series to earn major Emmy nods, including the Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Spacey, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Wright, and Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for David Fincher.

It continues to receive more nods from critics and viewers alike, including US President Barack Obama who also posted a tweet claiming that he watches the show.

"House of Cards" season 4 is expected to start filming this summer to be able to release the show early 2016.
