After a subdued season 4 finale, "Homeland" is set to give fans a more explosive return in its upcoming fifth season. Showtime president David Nevins shared a few details about how "Homeland" season 5 is taking shape.

After the season finale received lots of negative criticisms from viewers, Nevins claimed that the season 4 ending is just the right way to wrap up the extremely emotional season of the hit espionage political thriller.

"I think a show with this amount of political and narrative complexity can do a last episode that has a change of pace. I thought they needed to do an episode back in Washington, and needed to deal with Carrie's family situation and her issues with motherhood," he said.

According to the head of the cable network, the writers' pool of "Homeland" will possibly take a trip to the country's capital in preparation for the breathtaking season 5 premiere of the show. Although the Showtime president did not reveal the reason why the writers have to head over to Washington, D.C., he said that it has something to do with the development of the next chapter in Carrie Mathison's (Claire Danes) life.

It is expected that fans will see how Carrie will go forward following her father's death due to an illness back in the fourth season, and after her mother Ellen (Victoria Clark) reappears in her life. The show may also possibly develop a story about her half-brother that her mother never mentioned until now.

Will that brother appear in the next season?

Also, Peter Quinn (Rupert Friend) was seen leaving the country for another mission in Syria after he confessed his love for Carrie. Will she find a way to be with him again when the new episodes of the series come out?

Another possible plot for season 5 involves the return of Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin) as the head of the CIA. Will the alliance that he formed with the black ops specialist Dar Adal (F. Murray Abraham) work out in the upcoming season?

"Homeland" season 5 will start filming for its new episodes beginning May 2015, while the premiere airing will probably start in October.
