Speculations about the return of Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron in the "High School Musical" movie franchise continue as the former lovers remain mum about their participation in the upcoming fourth installment of the film.

New reports claim that both actors agreed to appear in "High School Musical 4: Wild and Knights." They are rumored to appear in cameo roles as vocal mentors to the new lead stars of the upcoming movie.

But both Hudgens and Efron remain silent about their rumored appearance to reprise their roles as Gabriella Montes and Troy Bolton, respectively, in the new "High School Musical" movie. Meanwhile, co-star Ashley Tisdale already revealed that she has no plans of returning to the movie as Sharpay Evans.

"Sharpay was such an awesome character, but at the end of the day it was a character, it wasn't me," Tisdale told New You magazine. "Looking back, it was such a perfect thing for its time and was so pure that I just don't know how you go from there. 'High School Musical' didn't make us, we made 'High School Musical' because of our friendship, how close we were, and the magic there at the time."

The news about the development of "High School Musical 4" was first announced in March 2016. "High School Musical is part of Disney Channel's DNA," Disney Channel President Gary Marsh said in a statement, as reported by E! News. "It embodies all that we stand for. As a way of continuing to embrace that heritage, we're excited to announce 'the start of something new' as we launch a search for a new class of East High Wildcats to star in a fourth installment of the 'High School Musical' franchise."

"High School Musical 4" will be directed and choreographed by "Teen Beach Movie" and "Teen Beach Movie 2" director Jeffrey Hornaday. The film is expected to premiere in 2017.
