'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3' cast rumors: Is Dave Bautista leaving the MCU?

Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer Marvel

Dave Bautista plays a major role in the "Guardians of the Galaxy" franchise as Drax the Destroyer. He is expected to appear in a few more films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), including the third installment in the cosmic film series. However, if the latest reports are any indication, he may retire his role ahead of Vol. 3 to wrestle.

According to reports, Bautista is said to be seriously considering a full-time WWE return complete with TV matches and non-televised wrestling events that would last six months to a year. This is welcoming news for WWE fans considering it has been a while since he body slammed opponents in the ring, but it may complicate his future in the MCU.

Based on the reports, the issue is that if he signs with WWE, he is expected to be fully committed to wrestling. If ever he is offered roles, the company that wants him needs to do be the one to compromise, making deals more difficult.

Bautista is confirmed for "Avengers: Infinity War" and "Avengers 4." The former has just wrapped filming, while the Phase 3 capper is expected to continue until January. Marvel has yet to announce the production start and release date for "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," but previous rumor indicated it may commence principal photography as soon as late 2018. If Bautista's WWE return is set next year, that means he may have to let go his MCU gig or have his role cut down, at least.

Then again, Bautista or WWE has not confirmed the claim, so this news is best taken with a grain of salt. The next installment of "Guardians" is not expected to hit theaters until 2020 as well. For what it is worth, director James Wan will have plenty of time to shuffle things around to accommodate the busy star.

Bautista will be back in action as Drax in "Avengers: Infinity War" and "Avengers 4," which will premiere on May 4, 2018, and May 3, 2019, respectively.
