'Guardians of the Galaxy 3' plot news: No Yondu revival, no new Guardians, confirms James Gunn

Michael Rooker as Yondu in "Guardians of the Galaxy" Marvel

There is not much known about "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" at this point. However, director James Gunn has recently spilled a few beans on what to expect from the franchise's third installment, and it could be disappointing for some.

For starters, Michael Rooker's blue-skinned pirate Yondu is staying dead. During a Twitter Q&A, Gunn was asked by a fan whether he has plans of resurrecting the adoptive father of Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) and his response was a big fat no. "He will never be brought back to life as long as I'm around," the director said. "His passing needs to mean something."

To recap, Yondu died in the climax of "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2" after staying behind on an imploding planet to save Peter whose biological father Ego (Kurt Russell), turned out to be a powerful villain. As Ego's planet collapsed, Rooker's character gave the only flight suit on hand that is capable of withstanding space, sacrificing his life in the process. Gunn previously revealed it is still possible to see Yondu again, but the only way to do that would be through a flashback or prequel. Too many times have fans seen characters brought back to life, and their deaths lose their emotional impact. As he pointed out, Yondu's passing needs to have a meaning and it did. Resurrecting him would only nullify his sacrifice, which touched everyone's hearts and made him the standout star of the second installment. Meanwhile, fans should not also expect any "new age" Guardians such as The Thing, Iron Man, Kitty Pride, or Agent Venom in any of his future GOTG projects. "As of today, I wouldn't find adding any of those characters interesting," Gunn replied to a question about the matter. "I really am more of a fan of the [Dan] Abnett/[Andy] Lanning stuff as opposed to the stuff that came after the movie or first screenplay."

Other information fans got from his Q&A session is that Disney's acquisition of Fox would have no impact on the story of "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3." He also confirmed that the threequel would arrive sometime in 2020, although Marvel has yet to make that official.
