What will happen to Dr. Grey and Dr. Shepherd this season? Facebook

Sandra Oh's Cristina Yang may have left the show in Season 10, but fans still have a lot to look forward to in Grey's Anatomy Season 11.

First off, there are several returning characters for the new season. This includes Caterina Scorsone who will reprise her role as Dr. Amelia Shepherd, who will become a series regular in season 11 after guesting in several episodes last season, as well as Patrick Fabian who will return to guest as Dr. Lebackes. Also, Kate Burton will return in flashbacks to reprise her role as Dr. Ellis Grey.

There are also a lot of casting additions as well, including Geena Davis who will play a major recurring role as one of the surgeons, and "The Americans" star Annet Mahendru will appear in one episode.

Mahendru confirmed her guesting via Twitter. "Had fun @GreysABC today ;) #GreysAnatomy," the actress said. She was known as Nina Sergeevna Krylova from the famous period drama.

For the season 11 plot spoilers, series creator Shonda Rhimes teased several details about what the fans could expect in the relationship of Dr. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and Dr. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey).

"I'm not going to say that Meredith and Derek are never going to break up," Rhimes told TVLine, "I'm not going to say that simply because we're writing a story and we're on this long, long journey. I've learned never to say absolutes about anything anymore. People always say, 'Seven seasons ago you said... ' Well, I didn't think we'd still be here."

Rhimes also provided additional information about what's in store for the show's lead characters.

"I was not interested in telling the story of a really good marriage that breaks up because of this," Rhimes stated. "There's work involved in keeping an amazing marriage amazing, and I would personally like to watch what happens when [they try] to fight through it."

The long-running medical drama series will return on ABC network for its 11th season on Sept. 25.
