The huge fan base of "Grey's Anatomy" is still processing the fact that their McDreamy died during the show's previous episode, and they are not alone.

Actor Patrick Dempsey, who portrayed the role of Derek Shepherd since the series began 10 years ago, is still reeling over his character's death. According to the actor, the decision to write off his character happened very quickly.

"It just sort of unfolded in a very organic way. I don't remember the date. It was not in the fall. February or March. It happened very quickly," the actor told Entertainment Weekly

But he also said that he thought about the fans' reaction when he was filming his final episode for the series.

"I think Shonda [Rhimes] cares deeply about the fans and how they will react. Shepherd is a beloved character. People don't want to lose him. He's been in their lives for over 10 years," said Dempsey.

The unexpected demise of Derek Shepherd shocked fans all over the world, but early rumors claimed that Rhimes was not happy with Dempsey's alleged diva attitude on the set, which is why she decided to kill of the character.

However, the series creator did not confirm the rumor, and instead said during an interview with ET Online that Dr. Shepherd will remain to be a very important character for her, Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), and for the fans.

"Patrick Dempsey's performance shaped Derek in a way that I know we both hope became a meaningful example – happy, sad, romantic, painful and always true – of what young women should demand from modern love," the series creator said. "His loss will be felt by all."

Meanwhile, ABC also issued an official statement about Dempsey's departure from the show, saying that the actor had to leave to be able to "pursue other interests."

But fans would still not accept McDreamy's death, and even launched a change.org petition to demand Dempsey's return on the show and recreate his final episode as a dream sequence. However, it seems like the decision is final and McDreamy will remain dead. Fans will have to watch Derek's wife Meredith and sister Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) grieve his death.

Episode 22 of "Grey's Anatomy" season 11 will air on April 30.
