Grand Theft Auto 6 release date news 2018: As 5th anniversary of GTA V approaches, Rockstar is staying quiet on sequel

This year marks a pretty big milestone for the Grand Theft Auto franchise but Rockstar Games is giving very little away when it comes to the next installment.

Unbelievably, it will be five years on September 17 this year since the arrival of GTA V.  Yes, we're scratching our heads too as to how five years could have passed by so fast.  It feels like the fifth installment just came out yesterday.

But all the more reason to wonder about the next installment as that's half a decade now of playing GTA V and while of course fans love it, they're itching for the release of Grand Theft Auto 6.

Given the anniversary coming up this year, we can't help but wonder if Rockstar will throw the game's very loyal fans a bone and make an announcement on the next installment as an anniversary treat.

They've been quiet so far this year, no doubt with the release of Red Dead Redemption absorbing all their time and energy - another sequel that they know they need to get right due to the high fan expectations.

The last rumor to do the rounds came from one 'reliable' source, which claimed that GTA VI will not see the light of day until 2022 - a full 4 years from now.

If that rumor turns out to be true, it will have been nearly a whole decade's wait for the sixth title and it could even then double up as a 20th anniversary celebration of the Grand Theft franchise as the first game in the franchise was launched all the way back in 2002.

This same source also claimed that the franchise will be moving back to Vice City for its setting, which would be a nice homage to the franchise's roots.

Other rumors have suggested South America as a location - which would make sense if the rumored codename 'Project Americas' turns out to have been true, too.

Let's hope Rockstar break their silence soon.
