A device believed to be the new version of the Nexus 6P popped up in the benchmark listing of Geekbench. There, it was revealed that the handset is getting a major facelift.
The listing refers to the device as Google Nexus 6P. It appears to be codenamed "Marlin," which certainly goes with the aquatic naming scheme for Nexus devices.
The new Nexus 6P will be the first smartphone to be equipped with the Android N, the latest mobile operating system from Google currently in development.
The listing also indicates that the revamped Nexus 6P will have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor under the hood with 4GB RAM to boot. This is certainly a big upgrade from last year's iteration, which came with a Snapdragon 810 chipset and 3GB RAM.
According to tech tipster Evan Blass, the device is one of the two devices HTC is working on. If that is to be believed, Google is holding on to HTC, which helped develop the original Nexus 6P, for its next Nexus flagship.
As for the other device HTC is busy with, it allegedly goes by the codename "Sailfish." This one is expected to be a variant, possibly a bigger one, of the new Nexus 6P.
Unfortunately for those eager to know more straight from Google, fans won't likely hear from the software giant until later this year, presumably September, where it typically launches its new Nexus offerings.
GSM Arena, however, suggests that the Nexus 6P that popped up on the listing may simply be a minor upgrade from the old one. If that will be the case, the device could be revealed next month during Google's I/O event.
Before the new Nexus 6P is made official, fans of the brand can take advantage of the $50 discount of the original Nexus 6P and the Nexus 5X on the Google Store.
