A lot of changes are expected to happen when "The Good Wife" returns for season 7.
New characters will join the political drama this season, including seasoned character actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who will portray the role of Alicia Florrick's (Julianna Margulies) new investigator, as Kalinda Sharma (Archie Panjabi) fled when the fake Brady violation that she staged to help save Cary Agos (Matt Czuchry) was discovered last season.
Aside from Morgan, Peter Gallagher was also cast to portray the role of lawyer Irving Carter. The character will reportedly work for billionaire Reese Dipple (Oliver Platt).
In a report posted on TV Fanatic, Carter was described as a type of lawyer who often opts to use civilized debate compared to senseless bullying tactics, but he is still willing to do whatever it takes to make sure that his clients' demands are met. Carter could pose a threat to Alicia, since he could be working for her husband Peter Florrick (Chris North), who is planning to move against her.
The official synopsis for the season 7 premiere has recently been released by CBS, which reads:
Alicia attempts to revive her struggling law career by once again starting her own law firm, this time with the assistance of Jason Crouse (Morgan), a calm, experienced investigator whom she hires. Also, to help with his Presidential campaign, Peter engages Willa Eastman (Margo Martindale, recurring), a national strategist who hides her intelligence and cunning under a fake, folksy charm, creating an interesting dynamic with Eli (Alan Cumming) in the process. In addition, Cush Jumbo joins the cast as attorney Lucca Quinn."
Meanwhile, the controversial scene in the season 6 finale is still being talked about months after it was shown. The scene showed Alicia and Kalinda in the same scene for the first time in two seasons with the use of CGI.
CBS Entertainment chairman Nina Tassler talked about the scene during the network's panel at the 2015 Television Critics Association summer press tour early this week. While Tassler refused to discuss how they came up with the scene involving two feuding actresses, she said that it ultimately served its purpose.
"Bottom line is, the ending of the show was a very satisfying ending for the relationship between those two characters. I stand behind how Robert and Michelle King produced their show," the CBS exec shared.
"The Good Wife" season 7 premieres on Sunday, Oct. 4.
