The future looks bleak for Carter Wilson (Kathryn Prescott) and her loved ones after the unexpected twist of events that happened in the last episode of "Finding Carter" season 2.

The first part of the two-episode season 2 finale started with a lovers' spat, then it quickly escalated into a bloody murder toward the end of the episode titled "The Sheltering Sky."

In that episode, Carter opted to break up with Jared (Jackson Rathbone) due to numerous reasons. But he did not take the breakup lightly. He hurt Carter and shove her toward the bar counter. Carter lost consciousness after her head hit the edge of the bar counter, and when she woke up, Carter discovered that Jared was also lying lifeless on the dancefloor.

Carter initially thought that she was the one responsible for Jared's death. But surprisingly, her fake mother and abductor Lori (Milena Govich) told the police that she was the one who killed Jared. According to Lori, she smashed a bottle on Jared's head after she apparently caught him choking her daughter.

But Carter knows Lori too well, which is why she refused to believe that she should be behind bars for a crime that she never committed. Later on, Carter realized that Lori was only covering up for someone. Eventually, she found out that Max (Alex Saxon) was the one who killed Jared. He later on admitted to the crime and was imprisoned.

Toward the end of "Finding Carter" season 2, the fate of the show remains hanging since MTV has yet to announce a season 3 renewal. But according to series executive producer Emily Whitesell, they created an open ending despite the uncertainty of the show's future.

"If we were going to continue, what would be interesting to leave everyone hanging and hold on, and what does our audience care about? And what would we like to see? And then try to get a consensus from the network about what they would care about as well. We came up with many, many different ideas and this was the one we all agreed on," Whitesell explained in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

The fate of Carter's long-lost brother Ben (Ben Winchell) is expected to be tackled if "Finding Carter" returns for season 3.
