'Extinction' gameplay news: Ogre armor affects attack patterns

Aerial-fighting game "Extinction" was announced several months ago, and it bragged a bit about the future of their gameplay mechanics. With early footage being released recently, players will find themselves battling giant ogres called Ravenni. However, defeating these monsters will not be as simple as just shooting them, as their armor will affect which attack the players have to use.

Most games require beating down bosses by just continuously hitting them until their health bars run out. With "Extinction," it is a bit harder than that. Players ideally need to strike at their legs and maybe even arms so they can be disabled. However, these Ravenni have different kinds of armor on their limbs that require different tactics on how to remove or disable them.

There are so far three different kinds of armor: iron, bone, and bright steel. Iron armor set-ups have locks holding it together, binding the armor to the ogre's body. Simply put, players have to break these locks using a powerful "rune strike." It may sound easy, but considering that the Ravenni will be moving its arms and body, gamers will be facing a tough challenge.

Bone armor, instead of locks, is connected by magical flaming skulls. Similarly, players need to strike at these skulls, but the flames will prevent them from getting any damage. The only way to put out the flames is by making the Ravenni use its attacks. The flames will not be up until a few moments after the monster attacks, and those moments are when the players need to hit the points of connection.

Lastly, Bright Steel is the toughest armor these Ravenni can have. Players simply cannot break these armor, so they will have to be forced to fight the Ravenni while it is standing up. This means that they will have to find other means to beat the Ravenni, requiring players to think creatively about their attacks.

Developers Iron Galaxy discussed these combat and gameplay mechanics on their YouTube channel. "Extinction" will be coming out on March 31, 2018 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
