'Dragon Ball Super' news: creator Akira Toriyama expresses discontent with anime

Dragon Ball Super Toei Animation

"Dragon Ball Super" is the first series in the franchise in 18 years, which wound up long-time fans who did not think that their favorite heroes and villains will once again grace television. However, "Dragon Ball" creator Akira Toriyama isn't very happy about how the anime looks.

The latest issue of the Japanese magazine V Jump published Dragon Ball 30th Anniversary Super History Book, which contained remarks by Toriyama showing his discontent with some of the reimaginings of his cult-favorite creation. He first called out the film "Dragon Ball Evolution" released in 2009.

"Inside, I've been upset at Dragon Ball in the past, as well as the live-action film that came later. I've revised the script for the anime film," he grumbled, as quoted by Comic Book Movie, adding (via Kanzenshuu) that the film "ticked me off."

He then shared a piece of his mind about "Dragon Ball Super," saying that "And I've complained about the quality of the TV anime. Maybe someday it'll be a work that I'll like so much that I won't be able to leave it alone."

As Comic Book Movie pointed out, "Dragon Ball Super" is not the best when it comes to animation. There have been various complaints about the sloppy animation and errors. A comparison of the 1995 anime from the new one provided by CBM highlights how the latter trails behind significantly.

In addition, Attack of the Fanboy recalls episode 5 of the series where the animation of anime hero Goku "looked worse than a kid's drawing." While the animation got better after the said atrocity, it remains sub-par to fans.

"Dragon Ball Super" is approaching the infamous Champa saga. The series will be airing episode 29 next week and it will see Beerus and Champa kicking off their tournament by assembling their respective teams. The episode will air Jan. 31 on Fuji TV.
