'Demon's Souls' online servers shutdown news: Precursor to 'Dark Souls' shutting down servers on February 28

Atlus' "Demon's Soul" is without a doubt something that majority of players nowadays remember from their childhood as the precursor to the now highly acclaimed "Dark Souls" franchise. But even though that is the case, players never really ceased to throw themselves back into the nostalgic premises of the action role-playing game.

However, as all of us know, all good things must come to an end. Sony, after over a decade of retaining online players' access, has decided to completely shut down servers to "Demon's Souls" starting Feb. 28.

Aside from this, player leaderboards, opponent's bloodstains, hints and messages, and wandering silhouettes will all cease to exist from the game after the server shutdown.

The initial announcement of the server shutdown was in November of last year, wherein Atlus, the game's publisher, released a statement on its website thanking players for the continued patronage of the game and the ending support for the title's online capabilities.

"Thank you to everyone who played Demon's Souls, and especially to those who still revisit its world from time to time. For those who haven't played in a while, we invite you to once again visit Boletaria while the servers are still live and celebrate its contributions with us," the game publisher said.

Initially, the game was supposed to be rid of its online components back in 2012. However, fans protested against the announcement so, Sony postponed the server shutdown and continued the maintenance on the game's servers up to this point.

"Demon's Souls" was released back in 2009 as a PlayStation 3 platformer. And not long after, the game garnered positive feedback and reviews from critics and gamers alike.

And although the game never really had a legitimate successor, it enabled the creation of other highly successful games such as "Bloodborne" and all the titles in the "Dark Souls" series.
