'Crash Bandicoot' PS4 release date news: revival still long way off despite fan demand

A follow-up to the PS4 classic "Crash Bandicoot: Mind Over Mutant" is not on Sony's agenda. Activision

Despite the iconic status of the beloved video game franchise "Crash Bandicoot" in the PlayStation community as well as the serious demand for it to return, Sony has no plans of revisiting Wumpa Island anytime soon.

In an interview with Official PlayStation Magazine (via VideoGamer), Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president Jim Ryan doused the reports of a "Crash Bandicoot" PS4 comeback.

"We're certainly aware of the considerable affection—even reverence—-in which the mighty Crash is held. But nothing to update at this stage in that area," he said.

Talks about the return of "Crash Bandicoot" started with a scene in "Uncharted 4" where Nathan Drake played an emulated version of the game. However, it looks like it is simply meant to be a nostalgia-inducing easter egg and nothing more.

"Crash Bandicoot" is one of the first games that "Uncharted" developer Naughty Dog ever put out. It follows an anthropomorphic bandicoot named Crash, a target of his powerful rival and creator Doctor Neo Cortex.

Activision still has the rights for "Crash Bandicoot," as confirmed a few days back by PlayStation Vice President of Publisher and Developer Relations Adam Boyes.

The last time Activision talked about actually expanding "Crash Bandicoot" was back in 2013, where they promised to "explore ways" to bring back the franchise. Since then, there hasn't been a concrete sign of this ever happening.

For now, fans will have to do with the fun little "Crash Bandicoot" easter egg on "Uncharted 4." The idea of reviving the PS4 exclusive is still a tall order, but gamers could only hope the demand for it will change Sony and Activision's mind.

The most recent "Crash Bandicoot" game from the main series is "Crash Bandicoot: Mind over Mutant" came out seven years ago. A racing-centric installment was released back in 2010.
