'Cloverfield' 3 rumors: Sequel heading to Netflix? Possible title revealed

The future of "Cloverfield 3" just got even murkier. After seeing multiple delays and a virtually nonexistent marketing that only kicked off mere months before its intended release, a new rumor claims the sequel may lose its theatrical release entirely.

The new tidbit comes from movie insider Jeff Sneider who overheard at the Sundance Film Festival that the third "Cloverfield" installment would be heading to Netflix instead. He noted, there is "no confirmation yet" and he is "just passing along" the rumor "since the delays HAVE been suspicious..." Check out his tweet below:

The untitled "Cloverfield" sequel has been plagued with delays over the past few years. It was originally scheduled for a February 2017 release, but has been constantly pushed back -- first to October 2017 then to January 2018 -- until it locked in its current April 2018 release.

While it is just a rumor for now, getting picked up by the streaming giant is not necessarily a death sentence for the film. It even makes more sense, according to Movie Web. The "Cloverfield" franchise is notorious for being secretive, and having its third installment debut on Netflix all of a sudden would fall right in line with that.

Also, there are strong competitions in its April 20 release window, possibly leaving not enough room for "Cloverfield 3" to achieve its box office target. Dwayne Johnson's "Rampage" opens on the same day, as well as the "Overboard" remake and "Star Troopers 2." As the publication predicts, Paramount could be cashing in on Netflix to garner a much larger audience than they could ever have by releasing it on the big screen.

"Cloverfield 3" is set to premiere on April 20. Paramount has yet to announce its official title, but recent reports allege it would be called "Cloverfield Space Station." The scoop comes from a Redditor who discovered the LinkedIn profile of Chinese lighting artist Rui Xu listing "Cloverfield Station" as one of the projects he has worked on.

As with the Netflix rumor, this has not been confirmed either, so fans should take it with a grain of salt.
