'Chrono Trigger' news: RPG game gets PC port, fans not happy

Square Enix's "Chrono Trigger" port leaves fans unimpressed. Steam/ Chrono Trigger

Everyone was overcome with delight as the nostalgic RPG title "Chrono Trigger," which players have all come to remember as one of the best examples of an RPG game done right, made a surprise release into the PC platform courtesy of Square Enix and Steam.

In partnership with Steam, Square Enix released what most dub as the greatest RPG game ever made, "Chrono Trigger" to PC users worldwide -- allowing fans to reminisce memories of the early gaming scene.

However, just as fast as nostalgia kicked in, fans were quick to notice that the game is a direct port of the "Chrono Trigger" version configured for the iOS and Android -- which obviously did not live up to expectations.

Players were quick to criticize Square Enix for its PC port of the game, calling it a lazy stunt by the original game developer.

The newly released Steam game's main problem points include an outdated sprite design, terrible graphics, tiling errors, and terrible fonts. Besides this, the biggest problem players who took the plunge in purchasing the game is its mobile-centric interface, which remains unchanged even after its port as a PC platformer. Along with the terrible user interface, the game also has remnants of on-screen controls that were intended for its mobile counterpart. And last but not the least, the game has poor support for gamepad and keyboard control.

This is not the first time Square Enix released ported games through Steam, in 2015, the game creator also issued a PC port of "Final Fantasy 6" which, much like "Chrono Trigger," received critical comments regarding its overall look and interface.

Since its 1995 debut on the Super Nintendo, "Chrono Trigger" has been ported to multiple platforms -- the original PlayStation console, Nintendo DS, and on iOS and Android in 2011.

Square Enix has yet to issue a statement regarding the backlash of the PC port.
