The New Black Panthers have called this week for rallies to take place across the nation in protest of the George Zimmerman not guilty verdict in the Trayvon Martin killing.
Malik Zulu Shabazz, the group's national chairman, told supporters to "take to the streets [and] stay there."
He also said on Twitter, "Were at war. Its (sic) silly and immoral to call for peace when war has been declared."
The news, which was reported on various news sites, was incorrect, however, as the video offering the ransom was in fact from 2012 in the aftermath of Trayvon Martin's death.
The false reports were sparked by a report from Kristin Tate with the Mr.Conservative website on Wednesday. The report refers to the bounty in a video, however, the video in question was in fact a video of a CNN report from March 2012.
The New Black Panthers at that time were outraged that the police had not immediately arrested Zimmerman for Martin's death and were offering money to capture Zimmerman, who they said they would hand over to police.
However, the report was mistaken for being recent and the news of a new bounty went viral following Zimmerman's not guilty verdict last weekend.
Over the past week there have been protests in cities across the United States at the not guilty verdict, and some protests have turned violent.
Many believe that Zimmerman racially profiled Martin and incited the confrontation with the unarmed black teenager. Zimmerman, however, has claimed that he acted in self defense and he only shot the teen as he feared for his own life.
The jury in the case believed the prosecution had not made the case for a second degree murder conviction and also found the evidence did not support a manslaughter conviction either, sparking outrage in various communities across the country.
