'Beetlejuice 2' movie news: Sequel with Michael Keaton and Tim Burton

Twenty-five years after talks about the sequel to the cult horror comedy "Beetlejuice," screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith revealed that the highly anticipated follow-up will finally push through.

The new generation of moviegoers will finally get to watch Betelgeuse (Michael Keaton) when Bettlejuice 2 comes to theaters soon. Facebook

The screenwriter recently talked about the upcoming second installment of the award-winning horror comedy flick and claimed that it will be a sequel to the story, contrary to earlier reports that the 1988 movie will be rebooted.

It is also written specifically for original "Beetlejuice" actor Michael Keaton, who played the iconic titular role of Beetlejuice, the eccentric, striped-suited "bio-exorcist" ghost. He will be joined once again by Tim Burton, who also directed the first film.

In the first movie, Betelgeuse (Keaton) is summoned by recently dead couple Adam (Alec Baldwin) and Barbara Maitland (Geena Davis) to help them scare the Deetz family, who became the new inhabitants of their home.

Other stars who appeared in the original film include Catherine O'Hara as Delia Deetz, Jeffrey Jones as Charles Deetz, and Winona Ryder as the Deetz' young goth daughter Lydia.

"Bettlejuice" won the Best Makeup award during the 1989 Academy Awards, while the British Academy of Film and Television Arts nominated it for the 42nd British Academy Film Awards under the Best Visual Effects and Best Makeup categories.

Talks about a sequel for the movie began as early as 1990, when Burton got Jonathan Gems' services to write a sequel that was allegedly titled "Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian." Although both Keaton and Ryder agreed to reprise their roles for the sequel, the project was shelved when Burton and Keaton became too busy with "Batman Returns." Grahame-Smith was then hired by Warner Bros. in 2011 to become the producer and writer for the sequel.

Keaton recently expressed his excitement about working with Burton again for the "Beetlejuice" project during the Golden Globes. According to him, the delay was caused by his and the director's availability. He is glad that they can now work together on the sequel.
