'Awkward' season 5 spoilers: A reversal of roles shocks Jenna and Matty in episode 3

Matty (Beau Mirchoff) finds himself in the bottom of the food chain in the next episode of Awkward season 5. MTV

Jenna Hamilton (Ashley Rickards) will have a startling discovery in the next episode of "Awkward" season 5.

Jenna was considered the new campus hero after the accident, thinking that she actually planned to spill water on the circuit breaker while cleaning up the mess caused by a senior prank. She did not understand what was going on at first but her best friend Tamara (Jillian Rose Reed) told her to just go with the flow.

In "Awkward" season 5 episode 3 titled "Jenna in Wonderland," the normally social outcast suddenly finds herself popular in school. Her recent accident prompts the school administrators to cancel classes for the rest of the day, allowing the senior class to have a party at the beach.

The episode's official synopsis reads: "Jenna is going to get a taste of popularity while Matty struggles with being shunned. Jake is going to go after a new student, and Ally will host a sex toy party."

In a promo trailer for the episode, Matty (Beau Mirchoff) realizes how it feels to be an unpopular student in high school. Since the start of the series, Matty has been one of the cool guys in Palos Verdes because of his looks and athleticism. But in the upcoming episode, Jenna's ex-boyfriend feels like he is invisible in the eyes of the other students.

Matty asks Jenna in the promo video why he is being ignored by the rest of the student body. Flashbacks of the day's events show him being ignored by a female classmate when he tries to say hi to her, and his classmates in gym class do not pick him to be a part of their basketball team. Even the lunch lady at the cafeteria gives him a small, burnt slice of pizza while the others get huge slices. He confronts Jenna about it, but she simply tells him that he is being treated that way because he is now unpopular.

But how long will Jenna and Matty's status reversal last?

"Awkward" season 5 episode 3 airs Monday, Sept. 14, on MTV.
